Jack H. “Duke” Gardner, 80 of Luna Pier, MI, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Duke married the love of his life, Mary (Sissy) Wadsworth on February 14, 1953. Their union resulted in his true pride and joys, children, Hilda (Ken) Welton, Steve (Deb), Ron (Roxanne) and David (Susan) Gardner. Duke is also survived by his brother, Charles (Pat) Gardner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Hilda Gardner and sister, Catherine Stanford. He was a machinist for the former Sharon Manufacturing for 34 years. He was better known as “Poppy” to his 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. All of whom he adored. Duke was selected as Luna Pier Citizen of the Year in 2012, for his many years of community service which included 5 years as a patrolman for the Luna Pier Police Department, 3 years as a Monroe County Special Deputy, and his true passion, a firefighter for 20 years with the Luna Pier Volunteer Fire Department, including rank of Lieutenant and ended with a fire department scanner by his bedside at Hospice. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper, assuring his knowledge was passed to his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3-8 pm Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where the Luna Pier Volunteer Fire Department will hold Last Call services Thursday at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be Friday, February 7, 2014, at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
